FSeL wins 2011 IM-IT Community Recognition Award

Ottawa, ON, May 26, 2011 — Congratulations to the multi-department FSeL Negotiation Team on receiving a 2011 IM-IT Community Recognition Award in the Cardillo-Bystram category for the Federal Science e-Library (FSeL) Proof-of-Concept project.

These Awards are presented annually to honour leadership excellence in IM and IT and to share and promote improved outcomes across government. The Cardillo-Bystram category recognizes stellar achievements in the IM field, particularly improving program outcomes by individuals or groups in the field of Library Science, Records Management or Information Management. The Cardillo-Bystram Award is jointly sponsored by the Chief Information Officer and the Chief Librarian & Archivist of the Government of Canada.

The goal of the FSeL Proof-of-Concept project was to negotiate a consortial licence with a major science publisher to demonstrate that efficiencies and cost savings could be achieved through this approach. The FSeL Negotiation Team implemented an innovative consortial licence in 2010, expanding access to key STM research for the six FSeL partners for significantly less money. Since then, the team has successfully negotiated consortial licences with two additional publishers.

Through this achievement, the Negotiation Team demonstrated the innovative capacity of federal libraries and the value and impact of engaging people across departments to negotiate and acquire electronic content.

Representatives from the FSeL departments (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada; Environment Canada; Fisheries and Oceans Canada; Health Canada; Natural Resources Canada; and the National Research Council's Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (NRC-CISTI) were honoured at a public ceremony on May 19, 2011.
