Sponsored by the Chief Scientist, Health Canada, on behalf of the Science ADMs

Prepared by: Lucie Molgat
Date: Monday, July 7, 2003

Purpose

A survey of the federal government scientific, technical and medical (STM) research community will investigate:

  • Researchers' perceptions of the value and impact of accessible scientific information in the form of electronic journals on their research quality and productivity. (Value indicates how well a need is met; impact may include the negative impact of not having access to this information.)
  • Whether comprehensive access to online fulltext STM journals does or will meet researchers' requirements for relevant information, or improve researcher satisfaction with currently available services.
Target Population:

All federal government employees engaged in research at National Research Council Canada, Natural Resources Canada, Health Canada, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and Environment Canada, in the following fields of study: Physical sciences, Natural sciences, Engineering, Life sciences, Medicine/Health, Information/Communications technology, Regulatory research, Policy research, Interdisciplinary.

Distribution / Sampling:

A 10-minute online questionnaire will be created and managed by CISTI. The Chief Librarians in the 6 departments will send e-mail invitations to all staff lists. Individuals will determine whether or not to complete the survey. The total possible sample is not known.

Survey Invitation
Federal Science eLibrary Survey - Win a book

The libraries of the science-based departments of the federal government are working together on an initiative, the Federal Science eLibrary, to deliver more electronic journals to the desktops of federal scientists and researchers. The Federal Science eLibrary project team is conducting a short survey to help us evaluate if wider access to electronic scientific journals would better support your research. This survey is sponsored by the Chief Scientist, Health Canada, on behalf of the Science ADMs.

Your participation is key to the success of this initiative and the survey should take about 10 minutes to complete online. Your participation in the survey also makes you eligible to win a book published by NRC Research Press. Five books will be awarded in total, drawn from all those who respond to the survey.

All collected information will be treated as confidential, analyzed by the Federal Science eLibrary project team and presented in its aggregate form. The data collected will be deleted one year following the completion of the study. No individual will be identified in any way.

To participate in the survey, please click here http://isti-icist.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/media/fsel.html to access the survey.

The survey will be posted on the site until August 15th, 2003.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to participate. If you have any questions about the purpose of the survey or how the results will be used, or would like more information about the Federal Science eLibrary, please do not hesitate to contact Susan Zwanenburg at the National Research Council Canada: Susan.Zwanenburg@nrc-cnrc.gc.ca.

Purpose of the survey

Thank you for participating in the e-journal user study. Completing this survey takes about 10 minutes and will help enhance our understanding of how federal government researchers in science, technology and medicine perceive:

  1. the value and impact of accessible scientific information in the form of electronic journals on their research quality and productivity, and
  2. whether desktop access to online full-text scientific, technical and medical journals does or will in future meet their information requirements and improve their level of satisfaction with the services currently available to them.
Privacy disclaimer

All information collected will be treated as confidential. No individual responses will be identified. Aggregated data only will be used, and individual data will be deleted one year after collection. Your e-mail address is requested only in the event that follow-up is required to clarify responses.
